Former Red Xabi Alonso is a huge fan of Liverpool’s top target Martín Zubimendi and “loved working with him”.

The 42-year-old may now famously be the manager of Bayer Leverkusen but before the Spaniard made the move to manage in Germany he took charge of Real Sociedad B, the team where he had started his career.

It was whilst Alonso was in this role that he first encountered Zubimendi, who transitioned to the Real Sociedad first team under Alonso’s tutelage.

Zubimendi has impressed ever since and now has been made Liverpool’s top target as Arne Slot looks to strengthen the base of his midfield.

Xabi Alonso RAVES about Martin Zubimendi

In an interview with The Guardian almost two years go, Alonso revealed his true thoughts about Zubimendi, saying:

“He’s generous, he always thinks more about his teammates than himself. He has that ability to generate play, to make those around him better, always offering solutions; to improve the move.

“He understands what the next step is before the ball gets to him. He has that ability to organise, the axis. I loved working with him.”

Alonso also proclaimed that Zubimendi has the “mark of Zubieta”, the academy of Real Sociedad that Alonso himself passed through.

This is a glowing review from the two-time Champions league winner who dazzled during his five year stay in Merseyside.

Is Zubimendi heading to Liverpool?

Negotiations are under way between Liverpool and Real Sociedad and Zubimendi also appears to have given the green light for the move to happen and could now be heading to Anfield to provide crucial reinforcements to the Red’s midfield.

It was no secret that the defensive midfield would need bolstering this summer and with strong interest in Wataru Endō and Tyler Morton it isn’t a surprise that this is the signing Liverpool have chosen to carry out first.

Despite a slow start to the transfer window, in which Liverpool are yet to make a signing, the Reds are targeting players in multiple other positions and the acquisition of a talent such as Zubimendi could kickstart their transfer window.
