Here’s our round-up of all the latest Liverpool transfer news today (Saturday 7 September) as a Liverpool great gives his verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future.
Legend explains why Salah must follow Ronaldo
Mohamed Salah is one of three hugely influential players who could leave Liverpool at the end of this season, when their current contracts are due to expire.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are in the same situation and there are currently no signs of the trio being offered fresh deals to retain them in Arne Slot’s squad.
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has weighed in on the debate, during a regular appearance as a pundit on ESPN.
The 1980s star insisted Salah would be his pick over the rearguard talents of Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk, for one simple reason. Goals.
“If you’ve got an opportunity to sign somebody who gives you 30 goals a season, you’ve got to take the goals.”
World Cup winner shocked at Chiesa signing
A former Ballon d'Or winner was surprised by Liverpool's late summer transfer window coup.
Many believe the Reds might have arrived late to the party, signing a player whose star seemed to have faded since his breakout. Once a force to be reckoned with, Chiesa's form has faltered in recent seasons due to injury, with some wondering whether Liverpool can reignite the Italian winger's career.
Despite the scepticism, there’s still hope. Chiesa is only 26, and with the reported £10 million fee initially paid to Juventus, the move could turn out to be one of the most intelligent signings of recent memory.
Of course, that depends on whether Liverpool can help him rediscover the “unbelievable” form that once made him one of the most exciting talents in Europe.
"Juventus had a great transfer window," Fabio Cannavaro told Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I didn’t expect Chiesa to Liverpool."
Chelsea legend makes huge Ngumoha prediction
Rio Ngumoha had been linked to top European clubs around the world, after being unable to agree a new contract with Chelsea.
Liverpool quickly swooped in and agreed a deal to sign him. The deal has actually been in place since July, but the process of signing him was delayed. The winger confirmed on his Instagram that the move was complete.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano officially confirmed the signing on Instagram, calling Rio a “top, super talent” and a “long term project”.
Former Chelsea defender John Terry then commented on the post saying “this boy is, and will be, a top player”.
Earning praise from such a decorated footballer such as Terry will thrill Liverpool fans, who are eager to see the progression of this star and his involvement within the squad.
Salah’s decision revealed, after Mane's woe
Mohamed Salah has scored three and assisted three goals in Liverpool's opening three matches this season, but the Egyptian King’s future at Anfield is still uncertain.
Although there was little reported interest in the 32-year-old this summer, his mostly likely destination has appeared to be a Saudi Pro League team. Al-Ittihad had a bid rejected for the Egyptian King in the 2023 summer window and Saudi clubs will likely be able to offer more in wages than any other teams can.
Paul Gorst of the Liverpool ECHO has revealed that Salah may be against a move to the Saudi Pro League and that he would rather stay at Anfield.
“The declining reputation of his former colleague Mane, since his move to the Middle East, has been cited as one reason for why Salah is seemingly against a move to the Saudi Pro League," Gorst said.
In the same report for the ECHO, Gorst says: “The low crowds, a lack of worldwide attention and the overall standard of the game in Saudi Arabia has been, by all accounts, weighed up by Salah against the financial benefits over the last year to reach a decision that he would like to stay a Liverpool player beyond the current deal.”
Legend's terrifying conclusion on Trent future
The future of homegrown Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a topic of debate for the last few weeks.
One former Liverpool legend spotted something recently which he thinks signals the imminent departure of Trent.
In a recent podcast, Up Front with Simon Jordan, Graeme Souness claimed he believes Arne Slot is nurturing Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley to take over from Trent.
Souness believes that Alexander-Arnold has already informed Liverpool of his plans to leave at the end of the season, therefore as result, Slot is now utilising Bradley more.
Souness further shared his wisdom on Trent’s future, saying: “I think, and this is just a guess, he’s mates with Bellingham and he would be tailor-made to Real Madrid. He could end up at Real Madrid. I think that message may have been relayed to Liverpool, he’s introduced Bradley both last week and this week, and by the way, he’s proper.
“I’m saying that maybe he has made up his mind and that has been relayed to the hierarchy at Liverpool. The manager is giving Bradley chances and keeping him onside, he’s having a good look at Bradley. That would be forward-planning.”
