Liverpool transfer news today: Solet chance, Mbappe decision

Here's our Liverpool FC transfer news roundup for Saturday, 3rd February 2024. Kylian Mbappe made his decision.

The fallout from the transfer window is still underway, with Liverpool having opted to stick with what they've got. That reportedly saw them pass up the chance to sign a long-term target, however.

Meanwhile, planning for the summer is the big thing on Red minds. Kylian Mbappe has reportedly made his decision (and not a shock one), while there are links to a defender in Germany.

Here's our Liverpool transfer news roundup.

Liverpool reject Solet chance

Liverpool supposedly had the chance to sign Oumar Solet from RB Salzburg last month. That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who says there was internal talk of getting a deal done.

Solet is a 23-year-old centre-back for Salzburg, who has played with decent regularity over the last couple of years. That includes two Champions League starts this season.

The Reds have supposedly had him scouted for some time, hence the offer, but ultimately decided not to sign the Frenchman.

"[Liverpool] were offered a nice possibility, an interesting opportunity with Oumar Solet at Salzburg as new centre-back – a player that they’ve been scouting for a long time," Romano told his Here We Go podcast.

"The German director at Liverpool, [Jorg] Schmadtke, knows the player so well so they were discussing internally the possibility for Solet. Then Liverpool decided not to sign any player.

Mbappe makes his choice

This comes from Le Parisien. They report that there's now 'pessimism' at Paris Saint-Germain around Kylian Mbappe because they're certain he's made a decision to join Real Madrid this summer.

Mbappe is free to join whoever he wants in 2024 with the expiry of his PSG contract. That's led to all sorts of rumours for years over who he wants to join, with three clubs standing above the rest.

There's always the option of renewing with PSG, of course. Real Madrid have always been the favourites to land him, though, while Liverpool were the dark horse in the race.

But it was always incredibly unlikely that he'd pick Liverpool. The wages involved here are astronomical for the Reds, while there's zero precedent for such a player moving to Anfield.

Liverpool like Openda

Liverpool are considering a move for RB Leipzig's Lois Openda, according to Christian Falk. The defender has plenty of suitors right now - but Leipzig don't want to sell.

However, they may not have a choice. There's a release clause in Openda's contract and it's one that could seriously tempt Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window.

“Lois Openda is considered unsaleable in Leipzig this summer,” Falk wrote in his Daily Briefing. “But he has an exit clause from 2025 for €85m [£73m].

“Interested parties from England are already lining up: West Ham, Brighton, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Chelsea. The attacker has a contract in Leipzig until 2028.”
