Club wants to seal Liverpool deal ‘as soon as possible’; news could break this week

Liverpool are expected to be in talks with at least one club this week who want to strike a deal ‘as soon as possible’. It could happen quickly.

Eindhovens Dagblad reports that PSV Eindhoven want to strike a deal with Liverpool for Sepp van den Berg ‘as soon as possible’. There have been links between the Eredivisie champions and the Reds’ Dutch 22-year-old for months now.

But things could now finally start moving forward. Liverpool delayed any talks with their preseason tour of the USA - Van den Berg ended up being a key part of it as so many senior centre-backs were away after international tournaments.

Now they’re back, things are expected to move quickly. The bigger question is whether PSV can actually afford Van den Berg.

Liverpool have set a £20m price and it’s one that PSV haven’t met up to now. That could change this week, though, as the Dutch giants talk with AS Monaco about Jordan Teze.

If the player moves to Ligue 1, PSV might have the money to sign Van den Berg. If he doesn’t, it’s difficult to see how this one goes though - no matter how eager PSV are to get the deal done quickly.

Van den Berg reluctant to stay

One thing that might force this one through, however, is Van den Berg’s reported reluctance to remain at Anfield. Kicker makes that claim while reporting on interest from Wolfsburg.

The feeling is that Van den Berg is prioritising regular first-team football over anything else and knows that’s unlikely with Liverpool. Instead, he’ll put a bit of pressure on the Reds to accept an offer from somewhere.

Maybe that’s PSV, maybe that’s a Bundesliga club (Mainz are also interested in a return) but this week could be telling. The season isn’t far off and if Van den Berg is to leave, now’s the time to seal a deal.
