Liverpool transfer news: Reds targeting 17-year-old Bordeaux ace on free transfer

Liverpool are tracking 17-year-old Bordeaux centre-back Mathys Angely after the French club filed for bankruptcy on Thursday.

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group had been in takeover discussions with the Ligue 2 club, who were desperate for financial support after years of mismanagement.

However, FSG decided against buying Bordeaux, forcing the club to file for bankruptcy and revoke their professional status due to their financial woes. All the contracts of their players and academy prospects have subsequently been terminated, too.

Former Liverpool player Albert Riera was the head coach for the six-time Ligue 1 winners and has also been released.

LIVERPOOL TARGET BORDEAUX YOUNGSTER

Unfortunately, the cut-throat world of professional football means one club's misfortune is another's opportunity, with teams across the world now interested in signing Bordeaux's former players on free transfers.

Liverpool are one of those keeping close tabs on the situation and Foot Mercato report that central defender Angely is of interest to the Reds.

The French teenager made five appearances for the senior squad last term and had recently penned a new contract until 2028.

The report states that Liverpool and a number of other clubs had been keen on signing Angely prior to his extension, with the Reds now gifted a second opportunity to capture his signature.

The 6ft3in left-footed defender is one of France's most promising prospects and is now available for absolutely nothing - exactly FSG's kind of deal.

Bordeaux's academy has nurtured talents such as Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni - a former Liverpool transfer target - and Barcelona defender Jules Kounde in recent times.

Liverpool are already close to finalising two deals for young academy starlets, with Alvin Ayman and Rio Ngumoha closing in on moves from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea Respectively.

The latter is a particularly exciting coup given how highly regarded he is in west London, with Chelsea said to be 'furious' over his decision to join the Reds.
