Liverpool transfer news: Newcastle chief REACTS to Anthony Gordon discussions
Newcastle United chief executive Darren Eales has discussed Anthony Gordon's future following recent reports linking him with Liverpool.
The former Everton forward emerged as a surprise candidate to join Liverpool at the end of June. with the Reds discussing a possible transfer with Newcastle.
The Magpies needed to sell players prior to the profit and sustainability regulations deadline on 30 June to avoid consequences and Gordon was one of the players they considered letting go.
However, talks with Liverpool quickly broke down after it emerged that Newcastle wanted young centre-back Jarell Quansah to head to St James' Park as part of the deal, a condition the Reds refused to entertain.
An orthodox deal for Gordon is also out of the question at present, with Liverpool unwilling to meet Newcastle's £100m valuation of the 23-year-old.
It appears that a transfer won't materialise this summer and Newcastle chief Eales has now discussed the winger's future.
ANTHONY GORDON EXPECTED TO STAY AT NEWCASTLE
Speaking about transfers ahead of the 2024/25 season, Eales reacted to recent rumours linking Newcastle's star players - such as Gordon - with Tyneside exits.
"Look, you know what the market is like, there will always be noise around any sort of transfer deadline. For us, it was one of those situations where we knew what we had to get to," admitted Eales (via The Northern Echo).
"In the end we had to do the deals that were right for the club, that made us compliant. So, from that perspective, we did what we had to do.
"But we kept what I would say are our core players, the type of players like [Alexander] Isak, Gordon, Bruno [Guimaraes], Joelinton - those players who are our core."
Asked whether Gordon and Newcastle's other prized assets would be at the club next season, Eales simply responded: "Yes."
Now that the PSR deadline has passed, Newcastle are no longer under any pressure to sell players. That makes it highly unlikely that Gordon will return to Merseyside, unless he forces a move.
