Liverpool transfer WON’T be stopped by NEW Merlin Rohl contract

Liverpool can still sign Merlin Rohl despite his brand-new contract at SC Freiburg. That won’t be enough to stop the Reds.

Bild journalist Christian Falk claimed yesterday that Liverpool are in the market for Merlin Rohl. The 22-year-old midfielder is currently at SC Freiburg and making waves in the Bundesliga.

Falk made one other claim - that Freiburg had offered the player a new contract to remain with the club long-term, directly because of Liverpool's interest. He didn't mention, however, that Rohl had actually signed that contract back on September 18th.

But we don't believe that is enough to panic Liverpool here. If they want Rohl, this contract won't be enough to stop them - and we can clearly see why they'd want Rohl.

Merlin Rohl is a wizard

Rohl really does look like the kind of midfielder Arne Slot wants. He's big (6ft 3), he's 'very quick' (says Germany's U21 coach), and he's versatile.

Rohl can play as an attacking midfielder or slightly more withdrawn in midfield. More than that, all of his stats show a player who's just as comfortable making things happen on the edge of the box as he is winning the ball back for his team.

That's at the heart of what Slot wants to do with his midfield. Pressing high, winning the ball back, then bursting forward to make things happen.

We're excited about the links to Rohl and believe he's one Liverpool should be watching right now. We also can't see the new contract being a problem.

Freiburg's record sale was Kevin Schade to Brentford a year ago for around £22m. Rohl is a player almost certainly worth more than that - but Freiburg don't have a history of £5om sales, in other words.

Liverpool may need to break that record to get Rohl but with the way he's going, it's a deal that might make complete sense. New contract or no new contract.
