Liverpool transfer news today: Zubimendi U-TURN, Trent UPDATE & Carvalho profit REVEALED
Liverpool still await their first signing of the summer window but that doesn't mean things are quiet on Merseyside.
The Reds may have been frustrated in their efforts to sign Martin Zubimendi, but there are plenty of young guns set for summer exits in the coming weeks.
Here is the latest Liverpool transfer news.
Liverpool lose Zubimendi chase
Various sources have now confirmed that Martin Zubimendi will REMAIN with Real Sociedad and the Spain midfielder could even sign a new contract.
It comes as a crushing blow for Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, with it claimed that the Scot had been given Zubimendi's word that he would move to Anfield this week.
However, it emerged late on Monday evening that the Spain Euro 2024 hero had experienced a change of heart and decided to stay put with his boyhood club.
Real Sociedad had ramped up the pressure on Zubimendi to stay since news broke last week of Liverpool's interest.
The player's contract buyout clause stood at €60 million and it emerged over the weekend that Zubimendi would be forced to hand over the cash to LaLiga himself in order for his contract to be rescinded.
It was later reported that the Reds had given the 25-year-old until Wednesday of this week in order to force through the move but hopes on Merseyside now appear to be definitively dashed.
Trent Alexander-Arnold contract update
Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold are reported to be ‘months away’ from any potential agreement on a new contract with Real Madrid ready to pounce.
Pete O’Rourke, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, revealed that there is room for Trent and Liverpool to agree to a new contract for the star right-back, but that this is still a few months away.
There will reportedly be a ‘huge’ pay rise for Alexander-Arnold, and given that he is already on a deal which see him paid £180,000-a-week, you would imagine any potential new contract would take him to being one of the highest earners at the club alongside Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
Fabio Carvalho nets Liverpool huge profit
Liverpool journalist Paul Joyce has broken down just how much Liverpool will earn from the sale of Fabio Carvalho to Brentford, with the Reds set to land a tidy profit.
Liverpool will receive a guaranteed fee of £22.5m for Carvalho with the possibility of an additional £5m in add-ons. They have also agreed a 17.5% sell-on clause.
However, Fulham will earn 20% of the profit made on Carvalho over £5m, which roughly equates to £2.1m without the add-ons and £3.1m if all the add-ons end up being paid by Brentford.
The Reds spent £7m on Carvalho from Fulham back in 2022 meaning that even if Brentford don't have to pay any additional money in add-ons, Liverpool are guaranteed a minimum profit of £13.4m.
James McConnell could leave Anfield
Liverpool youngster James McConnell has left a clue on his social media that he could be about to leave the club this summer.
The young midfielder has posted a cryptic story on his Instagram eerily similar to the one posted by Bobby Clark on his socials amid rumours of his departure.
The story depicts a black and white image of McConnell in action for Liverpool from a game last season with the emoji of an hourglass as the caption.
Many have interpreted this as a hint that McConnell could leave Merseyside. Anfield Watch understands McConnell had been offered to Barnsley on loan earlier in the season.
Liverpool tried to poach Willian Pacho
According to a report in French outlet Le10sport, when Liverpool learned that Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt had reached an agreement on centre-back Willian Pacho, the Reds offered the German club an even higher fee than the already considerable sum from the French champions.
However, Frankfurt informed Liverpool that they had already given PSG their word and their offer was sadly too late.
The Colombian defender is set to cost PSG €45m and had long been linked with a move to Anfield, but it offers supporters encouragement that a new centre-back signing could happen this summer.
Aston Villa in discussions over Arne Slot favourite
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida this summer but the Dutchman is advancing in discussions with another Premier League club.
Geertruida is the player that has made the most appearances under Slot over the course of the 45-year-old's managerial career - featuring 127 times during their spell together at Feyenoord.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Geertruida is 'high on the list' for Aston Villa as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a Champions League campaign.
The Midlands club are in discussions over a transfer, although Romano states that a deal will be complicated to complete.
