Manchester United could create a real problem for Liverpool as the Reds close in on their no.6 target this summer.

Everyone got very excited on Tuesday with the news that Liverpool have found the no.6 they want to sign. There had been suggestions that they simply wouldn't find that player, such was the market right now.

David Ornstein of the Athletic, though, broke the news that the Reds had found their man. What he didn't provide was a name - and that left everyone guessing.

One name gathering momentum is Martin Zubimendi, who has been incredibly impressive for Real Sociedad over the last few years. His cameo in the Euro 2024 final against England certainly had people talking.

But it appears that if Zubimendi is the player Liverpool want, they'll have competition. Dharmesh Seth of Sky Sports claims Manchester United are also looking at the Spaniard as they seek their own holding midfielder.

And that could create a problem for Liverpool.

Manchester United chase Zubimendi

Now, we firmly believe that Liverpool can tempt a player to Anfield over Old Trafford. Especially with a clear place in the squad and Champions League football next season.

However, we know it's not as simple as that with United involved. They like to make up for their struggles by offering bucketloads of cash to players, as seen this summer with Leny Yoro.

Liverpool also wanted the defender but United jumped in and offered £145k per week wages. The Reds were never going to match that for a teenager on the back of one great season.

And we might end up seeing a similar situation here. Even if Zubimendi isn't the player Liverpool ultimately want, they're still shopping in the same market as United and that means inflated - often irrational - offers are on the table to be competed with.
