Liverpool caught by surprise as David Ornstein shares SHOCK Leny Yoro update
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has issued a shock transfer update that appears to have caught Liverpool by surprise. Leny Yoro was more available than first thought.
David Ornstein claims Lille defender Leny Yoro is on his way to England for a medical with Manchester United. United have struck a £52m+ deal with the French club for a transfer this summer.
And that’s a shock, make no mistake. Yoro was expected to sign for Real Madrid at the end of his contract next summer, with other clubs bowing out of the race accordingly.
Liverpool were one of those. Like Paris Saint-Germain, they attempted to sign Yoro this summer but were convinced he only wanted to play for Real Madrid. As a result, both giants moved onto other targets.
United, however, didn’t. They never quit trying to convince Yoro and have gotten their way, against all the odds.
Real are not expected to meet Lille’s asking price and it seems that the young defender would rather take the guaranteed move now rather than sit around hoping the European champions make him an offer in 2025. With that, United perform the coup of the summer and one that leaves the likes of Liverpool looking a little foolish.
Leny Yoro to Manchester United
Now, Liverpool were plainly wrong about Yoro only listening to Real Madrid. On the other hand, we imagine the way United have swung this is by offering him a massive contract.
The Reds were never going to do that, given Yoro is still a teenager with relatively little experience under his belt. He’s one of the most talented young players around, certainly, but he’s still a player with potential rather than current world-class quality.
Liverpool, though, viewed him as a magnificent talent and one they’d find a place in their squad for. Would they have pushed harder if they thought there was a chance he’d reject Real? It’s hard to say.
After all, we’ve watched talent after talent choose Real over Liverpool for the last few years. Yoro was expected to be yet another one - but he’s instead heading somewhere far more irritating.
