Lucas Leiva has hailed Federico Chiesa as 'a fantastic signing' for Liverpool, drawing on his own, personal experiences.

Chiesa, the Italian forward who joined from Juventus just before the transfer deadline, is yet to make his debut for Arne Slot's side.

Lucas, a former Liverpool midfielder, faced Chiesa multiple times in Serie A during his time with Lazio. Chiesa, a Euro 2020 winner, impressed Lucas with his performances for both Fiorentina and Juventus.

Lucas praises Chiesa's talent

Speaking on LFCTV’s Extra Time, Lucas expressed his excitement about the signing: “I was thrilled when I saw the news. I played against him when he was at Fiorentina and then at Juventus.

“He’s a fantastic player. Of course, he’s returning from a major injury, but I’m sure Liverpool will manage his recovery carefully and choose the right moment to play him.

"He can operate on either wing and has the pace to become a key player for the team, which is already well-structured. I believe he adds great value to the squad, and I’m eager to see him in action.”

Former Reds goalkeeper David James, who was also a guest, shared Lucas’ enthusiasm, praising Chiesa’s energy and playing style. “I love him,” said James. “He has this relentless energy—when he plays, it’s 100 per cent commitment. He’s got the skills, and we’ve all seen them.

"I saw a clip on social media recently of him controlling the ball superbly and bending it into the top corner during training. He’s shown that level of dedication for Italy too.

"While he shares some traits with Liverpool’s current players, he brings an intensity that many Premier League defenders won’t be used to. It’s not all about fancy footwork; it’s his energy and commitment that stand out."

James added that Chiesa’s style will offer Liverpool a new dimension that will challenge opponents: “When called upon, I believe he’ll deliver. It’s a fantastic signing.”

Lucas also highlighted Chiesa’s key role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph: “Let’s not forget, before his injury, he was one of Italy’s most important players. A great signing—he can play on both flanks and brings a lot of pace. It will be exciting to watch him.”
