Liverpool Transfer News: Fabrizio Romano gives Alexander-Arnold update amid Real Madrid interest

Real Madrid are waiting in the wings and ready to pounce should Liverpool fail to agree a new contract with Trent Alexander-Arnold. 

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who revealed that the 14-time European champions are monitoring the England man’s current situation closely. 

Although there has been no contact as yet between Real and the player’s entourage, the Spanish capital side are interested signing in Alexander-Arnold next summer when his contract expires. 

“Now, it is also true, from what I am told that Real Madrid have a concrete interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Romano said on The Debrief podcast. 

“They are monitoring his situation. At the moment there is no direct contact with his agent or with the player because it is still too early. So Real Madrid are closely following the situation.”

Alexander-Arnold is one of a number of key Liverpool players out of contract in summer 2025 with club captain Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also approaching the final 12 months of their deals.

o an institutional reset at Anfield with owners FSG appointing ex-sporting director Michael Edwards as CEO of Football with Richard Hughes coming on board as sporting director.

Liverpool again have stability behind the scenes and it means that progress should begin regarding new deals for the aforementioned trio. 

However, Madrid's interest in adding Trent on a free in 2025 should have some alarm bells ringing around Merseyside.

Edwards and Hughes to talk with Alexander-Arnold over new deal

“Let’s see the next steps. At the moment, from what I am hearing, there is no concrete negotiation between Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold. That is why Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the situation,” Romano added. 

Alexander-Arnold, 25, is currently injured having torn a knee ligament against Arsenal in January and subsequently suffering a relapse in a Premier League game against Burnley. 

It’s expected that the full back turned midfielder will close in on a return to action after the international break. 

The homegrown star signed his last contract in July 2021 and is already one of the club's top earners, behind the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

“I think in next weeks, April, May, it will be important to understand if the new structure at Liverpool, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, will move to offer a new deal to Trent Alexander-Arnold and how this conversation will go,” Romano added.
