Major Arne Slot commitment set to DELAY Liverpool transfers

A major commitment by Arne Slot will delay any incoming transfers at Liverpool this summer. But it is the right decision?

The Athletic's latest piece on Liverpool's transfer business runs through all the reasons we're yet to see a single transfer at Anfield. The Reds are one of only two Premier League clubs (along with Fulham) who haven't made a permanent transfer and we're rapidly approaching August.

Clubs usually have some sort of business wrapped up by the start of July, let alone by the end of it. This has been a fairly unique summer, though.

Liverpool hired a new sporting director in Richard Hughes, a new head coach in Arne Slot, and saw two international tournaments disrupt things. On top of that, three key players are out of contract in one year's time - and two of them were at the tournaments.

But there's another reason things are delayed and it comes down to a commitment from Slot. The Athletic points out that the Dutchman is "committed to developing an exciting crop of academy youngsters and ensuring a pathway exists from the club’s youth setup to the first team".

In other words, he wants to make sure Liverpool give their talented group of youngsters every chance possible to make it with the Reds. Is that a risk, though?

Arne Slot's youth commitment

Liverpool undoubtedly have a group of young players they should bet on. If they all improve next season, then there really isn't any need for major transfers.

Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley would be excellent defensive options. Stefan Bajcetic would cover any midfield concerns, while Harvey Elliott could be the creative spark that the squad needs.

But it all depends on what the expectations are this season. It's a squad that can certainly finish in the top four and if they do kick-on and improve the youngsters then a title challenge is on the cards.

If none of the youngsters improve enough, though, Liverpool risk going backwards. That's the major gamble and as the season gets closer and closer, it feels like one the Reds are willing to take.
