Ryan Gravenberch has perhaps been the story of this early season.

The Dutchman has been a revelation in the defensive midfield position under new manager Arne Slot, pacifying Liverpool’s failure to sign top target Martin Zubimendi in the summer.

The player received the Man of the Match award for his performance against Wolves yesterday - much to the chagrin of teammate Ibrahima Konaté - and cut an understated when asked how he felt about his season so far.

"Of course, this season I want to show myself again. I think I’m [going] in the right way. I have to keep going. I’m happy.” Gravenberch said, “[Arne Slot] just put me in the starting XI and gave me a lot of confidence – and you see it. I think I’m doing really well."

After the match, his teammates took to social media to put out some good old fashioned camaraderie. Left-back Andy Robertson - who himself got an assist in the game for the opener - posted a picture of the midfielder seemingly taking a picture of his Man of the Match trophy, with the caption, ‘Give it a rest *sleeping emoji*’.

Trent Alexander-Arnold joined in, heaping praise on Gravenberch with the caption ‘Man of the moment *starry eyes emoji*’.

Gravenberch has been a revelation so far this season and only got better yesterday. The Dutchman won 100% of his tackles, completed a team-high 92% of his passes, a second-high six progressive passes and a second-high four passes into the final third. He is becoming an essential part of the way Liverpool way under new manager Arne Slot, winning the ball back high up the pitch in the counter-press, distributing it onwards to the progressing midfielders and attackers, and carrying the ball when necessary.

After not impressing too much in his first season at the club, Gravenberch already seems to be everything Reds imagined intended defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi was going to be.
