Liverpool player 'expected' to sign a new contract

Recent reports claim that Liverpool are in talks with Naby Keita over a new deal.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Liverpool are in discussions with the midfielder over a new contract.

Joyce goes on to say that the Guinea captain is 'expected' to agree new terms with the Reds.

Keita's contract expires at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Anfield Watch Verdict

Spotrac claim that Keita's current wage is £120,000 with Liverpool, which makes him the ninth-highest earner in the club.

If the midfielder does extend, then I'd expect the club to give him a wage reduction as his contributions to Jurgen Klopp's side since he joined from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £54 million back in 2018 haven't been as impactful as the Reds would've hoped.

When speaking about Keita in interviews, as quoted by the club's official website and AW's Twitter account, Klopp is always full of praise for the Guinea international.

"When Naby is fit and has rhythm, he is really, really good. He is a great player. The future is bright for him," the German said.

Klopp also said that on his day, Keita is one of the best midfielders he's ever seen.

"On his day, Naby is one of the best midfielders I've ever seen," he said.

Keita can be a great player, unfortunately, his injury issues have really hampered his progression in a Liverpool shirt.

However, if he does improve injury-wise, as he has done the past season, then the 27-year-old can still become a vital part of our team.

It might not be in the starting role. But, due to the number of games Liverpool play, we always need backup options. Keita would be one hell of a player to bring off the bench to help change the game.
