After scoring in Argentina’s 3-0 win against Chile on Friday, Mac Allister had to come off for tightness in his calf, which had hindered his match preparations earlier in the week.

However, today he broke his silence on Instagram with a post saying, “Getting ready for what's coming! Vamos”.

Smiling in the photo, it is suggested that Mac Allister’s injury is not serious and his substitution may only have been a precautionary measure.

According to TyC Sports, he was told to train separately from the rest of the players, ensuring not to overstrain his muscles and there have been positive signs in his recovery.

The importance of Alexis Mac Allister

In a new midfield role under Arne Slot, it isn’t always clear exactly what he does on the pitch, but his freedom to assist the forwards and help the defence is often what makes the rest of the team around him so successful.

Starting all four games he has been available for so far this season,  Mac Allister is an integral player for both club and country, with his fitness being paramount for both to succeed.

Tonight's Argentina match is against Luis Diaz's Columbia team, the only side still unbeaten in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualification.

In his most recent press conference, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said: "The team is doing well, regaining some strength, but still with some typical ailments.

"We'll see how things develop. We can make some changes [but] we don't know how many."

Mac Allister will be in the travelling squad, but whether he will be used on the pitch at all is still unknown.

Liverpool are next back in action at Anfield on Saturday in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest.
