Former Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks set to return to the Premier League after only one year with Besiktas.

The former Red was released last summer at the end of his contract after only making 13 appearances in his final season at Anfield.

Now, The Athletic are reporting that Besiktas and Oxlade-Chamberlain are “reviewing options” for the soon-to-be 31-year-old to return to the Premier League.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made 146 appearances for Liverpool during his six-season stay in Merseyside, winning the Champions League and Premier League, but faced some tough battles with injury including a cruciate ligament tear that saw him sit out for almost a year.

How has Oxlade-Chamberlain faired in Turkey?

The Ox’s injury problems unfortunately followed him to Istanbul with a torn thigh muscle causing him to miss 18 games last season.

The Southampton academy product didn’t ever really find his feet in Turkey and was never able to nail down a place in the starting XI. Despite limited minutes he was able to put up some decent numbers, scoring four goals and assisting another.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is now looking to return to the premier league as Besiktas look to restructure their squad and reduce their wage bill. The Athletic revealed recently that there are multiple clubs currently exploring a permanent or loan move for the midfielder.

How have Liverpool faired without Oxlade-Chamberlain?

The departure of Oxlade-Chamberlain was part of a huge midfield overhaul that also saw James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho leave the club whilst new arrivals included Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endō.

Although the new midfield struggled at times, the player with the most similar profile to Oxlade-Chamberlain, Szoboszlai, lived up to expectations.

Now, Liverpool are looking to improve their revamped midfield further and return themselves to the very top of European football.

Although The Athletic’s report did not name any of the teams currently exploring a deal for the former Red, there are bound to be some suitors in the Premier League and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could find himself lining up against his former team sooner rather than later.
