Liverpool to REJECT Jurgen Klopp advice and let player leave this summer
Liverpool will reject advice from Jurgen Klopp this summer and let a player leave this summer. The boss will also depart, of course.
The Times claims Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool they should renew Joel Matip's contract this summer. That's despite the 32-year-old suffering an ACL injury that has kept him out for months.
Even without the injury, there was a sense that Matip would leave. He'll turn 33 later this year and Liverpool have competition in the position.
Virgil van Dijk is also moving through his 30s. Having both on the books feels a little like kicking the can down the road, forcing Liverpool into a major defensive overhaul down the line.
But Klopp is of the opinion, it seems, that Matip should be retained. Few could blame him for that, in truth - Matip has always been the player he turned to as Van Dijk's most reliable partner.
Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté have all had great spells in that role. Ultimately, though, their form dropped off and Matip stepped back in.
That, we imagine, would be Klopp's reasoning for still seeing life in Matip at Liverpool. By all accounts it won't happen, however.
Joel Matip and Liverpool
It's been an incredible spell for Matip at Liverpool, but one that's almost certainly coming to an end. He'll go down as one of the greatest free transfers in the club's history and one of the key parts of the 2019 Champions League-winning team.
But what a shame for it to end like this. Matip's injury ruled him entirely out of the Jurgen Klopp farewell tour - as well as his own.
Of course, we'll all be rooting for him on his return for injury, wherever he ultimately goes. Matip has been a sensational centre-back for Liverpool and will leave as a club legend.
