Liverpool interested in Ajax right back Devyne Rensch

Liverpool are 'keeping tabs' on Ajax defender Devyne Rensch, according to a report.

The Reds spent the summer transfer window undertaking a massive midfield overhaul that saw the departure of six first-team stars and the £145m arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Having revamped the midfield, the backline is next up on the recruitment agenda. Anfield Watch understands that strengthening the defence will be Liverpool's priority in 2024.

Now Football Insider claim that the Reds are looking at 20-year-old Ajax starlet Rensch, who is also being monitored by Arsenal.

The report adds that Liverpool are interested in finding versatile defensive options who can cover multiple defensive roles.

A one-cap Netherlands international, Rensch has primarily featured as a right back for Ajax, though he can and has played as a centre back, left back and even as a midfielder.

Despite his young age, the academy product has played 92 times for the Ajax senior side, winning two Eredivisie titles and has experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Rensch made his senior Netherlands debut back in 2021, coming off the bench in a 6-1 World Cup qualifying win over Turkey. However, since then he has regularly featured for Michael Reiziger's Under-21 side.

The youngster is under contract until 2025, meaning the next two transfer windows may be the last chance for Ajax to secure a decent transfer fee for their homegrown talent, or face losing him on a free transfer.

Meanwhile Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool also have an interest in fellow Eredivisie right back Yukinari Sugawara, who plays for AZ.

Like Rensch, the 23-year-old Japan star is versatile and can play across the backline, while his contract is also due to expire in 2025.

As well as versatile options, Liverpool are keen to recruit a young, left-sided centre back who can fit Jurgen Klopp's tweaked tactical system.

Levi Colwill was one option explored over the summer, before the England international signed a new long-term deal with Chelsea.
