"Liverpool have some real problems" - Robbie Fowler on the Reds

Former Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler has given his verdict on the club's start to the 2022-23 campaign.

The Reds have struggled so far this season. In terms of the Premier League, Liverpool have only accumulated nine points from a possible 18.

The Reds also lost their opening Champions League group stage clash 4-1 to Napoli away from home.

Fowler has said the following about Liverpool's start to the campaign.

“It looks like Liverpool have some real problems, there’s no doubt about that, and no hiding from it either," he told The Mirror, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

“They were a few minutes away from the title, until (Aston) Villa collapsed at the Etihad. They were by far the better team in the Champions League final, against a Real Madrid side who were clearly fearful of Liverpool, and astonished that they had won.

“Now, seven games into a new season they’re finished as a force? It doesn’t happen like that. Great teams do decline, but it’s over years, not days.

“So you have to look at other issues, and the chief amongst them is injuries. I’m not saying having four midfielders injured is an excuse, I’m saying Liverpool made an error in not planning for those injuries. They made the big mistake of thinking numbers meant quality.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Fowler is spot on. Liverpool have been very unlucky with injuries this campaign.

The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and Diogo Jota have missed games for the Reds this season due to respective injuries.

Darwin Nunez also missed three matches due to suspension. So, Jurgen Klopp certainly hasn't had a full squad to pick from in the early stages of the season.

Hopefully things start to turn for Liverpool sooner rather later. Otherwise, it could be a very long campaign.
