"You’re telling me" - Chairman suggests Liverpool should have signed Ivan Toney

Peterborough United chairman Darren MacAnthony has suggested that Liverpool should have signed Brentford's Ivan Toney instead of Darwin Nunez.

The Reds acquired the striker from Benfica for a transfer fee of £67.50 million earlier this summer.

However, MacAnthony, who is a Liverpool fan, implied that the Reds missed a trick by not signing Toney instead.

As quoted by Rousing the Kop, he told The Hard Truth podcast the following: “Let me ask you the next question. Darwin Nunez, £85 million (was actually £67.50 million), 23, Ivan Toney, 26. Who is the better number nine?”

“Nunez might have a hell of a career, he might do really well for Liverpool, Liverpool like to be direct – let’s not joke Liverpool are a direct football team, all of our goals come from full-backs and crosses.

“We are a little direct and it suits us, there’s nothing wrong with that. You’re telling me an Ivan Toney in Liverpool’s team wouldn’t score 25 goals with those full-backs delivering. Come off it!”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Toney is a solid striker. He has found the back of the net five times in six Premier League appearances this season.

As MacAnthony pointed out, Toney is also reasonably young (26). The forward's career is far from finished.

But, Nunez certainly has more upside. The Uruguay international is younger (23) and he has proven himself on the big stage.

Nunez scored six goals in 10 Champions League appearances last season. So, we are quite glad that Liverpool signed Nunez and not Toney.

However, only time will tell if the Uruguayan is to be a good player for the club.
