Xabi Alonso dismisses exit rumours despite Liverpool clause

Xabi Alonso insists he is happy at Bayer Leverkusen despite a clause in his contract that would reportedly allow him to join Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

Alonso's Leverkusen have made a sensational start to the 2023/24 season and remain unbeaten in all competitions so far. They are also the only team to have won all five of their Europa League group games and the German outfit currently find themselves top of the Bundesliga table.

While they couldn't fully capitalise on Bayern's 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend after only managing a 1-1 draw with fellow high-flyers Stuttgart, Alonso has seen his stock rise significantly this campaign, with Leverkusen playing some incredibly attractive football.

With a reported clause in his contract that would allow him to leave Leverkusen for one of three former clubs - Liverpool. Bayern and Madrid - there had been rumours linking the Spaniard with an exit from the BayArena.

However, the former Liverpool midfielder has poured cold water on suggestions that he could leave Leverkusen, insisting he remains fully committed to the club.

Alonso recently stated (via Sport Witness): "Get out clause? These are contractual questions. At the moment I am very strongly tied to Leverkusen. I feel very comfortable at the moment."

There had been widespread rumours suggesting Alonso could make the move to Madrid at the end of this season, with current Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti linked with the Brazil national team job.

However, recent reports have suggested that Ancelotti may be offered a new deal with Madrid, potentially putting an end to said links.

With Jurgen Klopp still under contract with the Reds until 2026, with the possibility of the German extending his Anfield stay, Alonso would not be needed in the Liverpool dugout for a few years.

However, the former Liverpool No. 14 has shown that he has the credentials and managerial quality to succeed Klopp at Anfield one day, perhaps with a Bundesliga title under his belt by then.
