"Would have been a great signing" - John Barnes on who he wanted to see at Anfield

Former Liverpool winger John Barnes wanted the club to sign Yves Bissouma.

The 25-year-old left Brighton and Hove Albion and joined Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee of £26.28 million earlier this summer.

Barnes believes that Liverpool missed a trick by not signing Bissouma this window.

"Yves Bissouma would have been a great signing. Regardless of what actually went on, he went to Tottenham and you can see how strong Tottenham are that Yves Bissouma is now in the team," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

"Now Liverpool look a bit light in midfield and the transfer window is still open but it has to make sense. Any signings have to make sense. We’re not going to panic buy.

"We’re not going to just buy someone as other clubs probably would because they feel under pressure. I think Jurgen Klopp has enough money in the bank with the fans and with people for them to still have faith in him.

"But obviously if it makes sense and there could be a player that improves us then I’m sure they’ll make that decision.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We actually agree with Barnes. The midfielder would have been a fine addition to Jurgen Klopp's squad.

Bissouma was a very solid player for Brighton. The Mali international averaged a WhoScored player rating of 6.99 across the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

Also, Bissouma is only 25 years of age. With that being the case, it would be fair to assume he is far from the finished article.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has a track record of developing and improving footballers.

We are convinced that Bissouma would have proven to be a fine player under the German. But, it just wasn't meant to be. We simply have to move on.
