"Won't be held to ransom" - Journalist on Mohamed Salah's contract situation

Journalist Theo Squires has provided an update on Mohamed Salah's contract situation.

The Liverpool winger's current deal expires next summer. Therefore, the club are reportedly trying to reach new terms with Salah.

The Egyptian international has turned down a new contract from the club because he wants more money than what is being offered.

However, Squires has made it clear that Liverpool won't be held ransom by Salah and his representatives.

As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told the Liverpool Echo the following: "Mo Salah’s contract situation is unchanged. The issue is such terms are way out of proportion compared to the rest of the squad. If the Reds met such demands, they could well have to hike up a number of other wages which isn’t feasible.

“Liverpool won’t be held to ransom. They’ve let (Sadio) Mane, (Gini) Wijnaldum and Emre Can all depart after not agreeing a new contract and Salah will join that list if a compromise can’t be reached.

“But they haven’t given up hope of keeping Salah just yet. If it was any other player making such demands when the wrong side of 30, it would be story over. But Salah’s status shows he is worth that little bit more.

“They’re still trying to agree new terms but they know time is running out.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

We really do hope that Salah and the club can reach an agreement in the near future. This contract saga has been going on for months and to be honest, we are sick of writing about it.

Salah is a world-class player. The winger has scored 156 goals and registered 63 assists in 254 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.

Therefore, we don't want to see Salah leave the club anytime soon. He is one of our favourite players. But, only time will tell where Salah's long-term future lies.
