Who is Liverpool defender Owen Beck?: All you need to know
Liverpool recalled Owen Beck from his loan at Dundee in January 2024. Here's everything you need to know about the player.
Liverpool are in the midst of a crisis at left-back with both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas suffering long-term injuries. The Reds were linked with a few players in the transfer window but decided to make a different move - recalling Owen Beck.
The 21-year-old has been on loan at Dundee over the first half of the season. After impressing with regular football, Liverpool felt he could help them while Robertson and Tsimikas recover.
But, of course, Beck isn't exactly a big name - so here's all you need to know about him.
Owen Beck - the basics
- Name: Owen Beck
- Position: Left-back
- Age: 21
- Nationality: Welsh
- Birthplace: Wrexham
- Clubs played for: Liverpool, Bolton, Dundee
- National caps: 14 for Wales U21s
Career so far
Beck started playing for his local team Flint Town as a junior. His efforts as a striker got him picked up by Stoke City, who turned him into a left-back.
Beck impressed enough that Liverpool signed him for their academy when he was 12. That was a particularly notable one for the youngster as his great uncle is Ian Rush.
That was 2015 and Beck has been on the Reds' books ever since. They initially tried to get him regular football in 2022 at Familicao in Portugal but he was recalled just a month later after failing to play. That led to a loan at Bolton Wanderers instead - but once again, Liverpool called him back prematurely at the start of 2023.
Last summer they sent him to Dundee in Scotland and things went fantastically well. So well, in fact, that Liverpool have recalled him once again - but for nothing but positive reasons.
How Owen Beck did at Dundee
Beck played 17 times for Dundee before the recall and has played around 94% of the available minutes. In other words, he was a complete regular as Dundee's starting left-back.
He managed two goals and two assists from the position, too, while also boasting more tackles than anyone else in the Scottish Premiership. That stat, above all, likely convinced Liverpool that he could do a job for them.
And in a fantastic sign of just how good Beck was in Scotland, The Times report that both Celtic and Rangers put in offers to sign him after Liverpool called him back. The Reds rejected both, however, as they intend to use him themselves.
Per Fbref, Beck was top-10 in Scotland for assists, crosses, interceptions and tackles. That's pretty much ticking every box you want out of a fullback and it should be no surprise that Liverpool want to take a chance on him.
