Where Jurgen Klopp ranks among Premier League's highest spending managers

Liverpool's owners may not be able to compete with the very richest clubs on the planet, but Jurgen Klopp is among the top spending managers in the Premier League's history.

Though exact transfer figures are notoriously hard to calculate, Klopp now ranks fourth on the 'highest spending Premier League managers' since the turn of the century, according to the Mirror.

The German has overseen a reported expenditure of £613m since his arrival in October 2015, putting him behind only Arsene Wenger (£726.36m), Pep Guardiola (£1bn) and Jose Mourinho (£1.14bn) on the list, which only records transfer fees spent since 2000.

Klopp has been in charge for nearly eight years at Liverpool, and his longevity at a top club goes some way to justifying his position on the list.

While Liverpool under FSG have operated with a policy of living within their means and creating superstars rather than paying a premium for them, Klopp has still been afforded some big-money signings – notably the arrivals of Virgil van Dijk (£75m, 2018) and Darwin Nuñez (£85m, 2022).

Though Sir Alex Ferguson ranks below Klopp in sixth place, his given total of £570.46m would almost certainly surpass the Liverpool boss' if figures pre-millennium were also included.

Curiously, ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers comes in fifth in the rankings with an expenditure of £591.86m.

Rodgers famously oversaw big money arrivals including Roberto Firmino (£29m) and Christian Benteke (£32.5m) at Anfield during his three-year tenure, while at Leicester he brought in Youri Tielemans for (£32m) and Wesley Fofana for (£36.5m).

In a separate list, the Mirror puts Klopp third for 'average spend per player' with £23.57m. He sits behind only Antonio Conte (£24.34m) and – unsurprisingly – Guardiola (£24.47m).

Though Klopp ranks highly for overall outlay on transfers, Liverpool's net spend is famously controlled.

In three of his seasons at Anfield, Klopp's Liverpool have received more money for transfers than they've paid out on new arrivals.

A recent viral stat even showed that the Reds boss has a lower net spend than Erik ten Hag, despite the fact the current Manchester United boss has only been in the job for a single year.

Liverpool have splashed out £95m on transfers so far this summer on Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, with at least one more midfielder – possibly two, plus a defender – expected before the 1 September deadline.
