"When you lose someone like Mane" - Jamie Carragher on Sadio's departure
Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has given his thoughts on Sadio Mane's departure from Anfield.
The winger joined Bayern Munich for a transfer fee of £28.80 million earlier this summer.
Mane was an exceptional player for Liverpool. The Senegal international found the back of the net 120 times and secured 48 assists in 269 appearances for the club's first-team.
Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez to replace Mane.
However, Carragher believes that only time will tell if the Uruguay international will be able to live up to the standards set by Mane.
“I think that remains to be seen,” the ex-Red told talkSPORT, as quoted by Manchester Evening News.
“When you lose someone like Mane, who has been so pivotal for four or five years, and you’re bringing in a sort of unknown quantity in Nunez.
“He looks a top player and has great pedigree — and Liverpool did need to bring the average age of that front-three down. It’s difficult to say they look stronger right now, considering how good Mane was, certainly in the second half of last season.
“But also I’m really excited to see how they evolve with Nunez. It’s interesting to see the change of the dynamics of the team and, if it makes Liverpool better, then who knows?”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Nunez was a very good player for Benfica. The striker scored 47 goals in 84 appearances for the Portuguese club.
Therefore, we are confident that Nunez will show his worth over time. Mane will be missed, but big players have departed Anfield before. The club has survived.
We wish Nunez all the very best ahead of his debut campaign in England. The supporters are right behind him.
