Jurgen Klopp's full record for Liverpool against Man City at the Etihad Stadium

Liverpool head to the Etihad stadium for the 11th time under Jürgen Klopp this Saturday as the Reds look to overtake Treble winners Manchester City in the Premier League table.

A win over the Citizens in the early afternoon kick-off would put Liverpool top of the table, but a trip to the home of the champions is never easy.

So, how have Liverpool faired since Klopp arrived at Anfield?

In short, not very well.

Since Klopp came through the door at the club in October 2015, the Reds have travelled to the blue side of Manchester on ten occasions in all competitions. In total those trips have yielded just two wins.

Even more alarmingly, just one of those wins has come in the Premier League - and it was during Klopp's very first taste of this fixture back in November 2015.

With Manuel Pellegrini in the opposing dugout, the Reds ran riot in a game where Roberto Firmino announced himself on the scene, assisting two and scoring his first goal in a Red shirt during a 4-1 win.

By the time of the next meeting of these two sides at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola had replaced Pellegrini, renewing a rivalry with Klopp that dated back to their time in the Bundesliga together.

This time it was a 1-1 stalemate, with Sergio Agüero cancelling out a James Milner penalty.

Big losses

Since then, however, it has gone downhill for Liverpool. The next in the series was a heavy 5-0 defeat in September 2017, during which Sadio Mané received a straight red card for a high foot on Ederson with the scores at 1-0.

In the 2018/19 season, the Reds famously lost the title by a couple of millimetres during a 2-1 loss at the Etihad at the start of January.

John Stones's clearance after the ball ricocheted off Ederson was judged not to have crossed the line by the tiniest of margins and the Reds ended up trailing City by just one point on the final day. How different things could have been!

Guard of honour

Things were indeed very different 17 months later, when Liverpool arrived at the Etihad with the Premier League title already in the bag with seven games still to play.

That said, despite City (and Bernardo Silva, in particular) begrudgingly giving the champions-elect a guard of honour, the Sky Blues nonetheless still dished out a spanking, winning 4-0.

Back-to-back draws

Liverpool's title defence didn't go exactly the plan the following year, and the two sides fought out a 1-1 draw - the first in a series of back-to-back ties.

The second came in the context of yet another nail-biting title race. Again, a 2-2 draw ultimately went in City's favour, as they won the title once more by just a single point as the Reds missed out on a potential Quadruple.

Last time out

Liverpool's last trip to the Etihad will still be fresh in the memory. A 4-1 defeat on matchday 29 came as a major blow to the Reds' ambitions of finishing in the top four.

Despite Mohamed Salah putting Klopp's men ahead in the 17th minute, goals from Julián Álvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish helped City to reel in Arsenal at the top of the table and complete a historic Treble.

Record in the cups

Though Liverpool did, in fact, lose twice at the Etihad last season (including a 3-2 defeat in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup), the Reds have a better record in cup competitions (albeit they have only played two matches).

In the 2017/18 Champions League, having come into the second leg on the back of a 3-0 win at Anfield, the Reds completed an impressive 5-1 aggregate quarter-final win on their road to the final in Kyiv with a 2-1 win at the Etihad.

Goals from Salah and Firmino extinguished all hope of a comeback after Gabriel Jesus had put the hosts in the lead.

A good chance to make amends

This time around, with Manchester City suffering a mini injury crisis, surely the Reds now have an excellent opportunity to improve their appalling record under Klopp away to City.
