Jurgen Klopp updates on Mo Salah & Darwin Nunez as pair miss Luton with injuries

Jurgen Klopp provided an update on both Darwin Nuñez and Mohamed Salah, as Liverpool beat Luton Town 4-1 on Wednesday night.

The Reds produced a stunning second-half comeback to run out comfortable winners at Anfield, as Klopp was forced to field his youngest starting XI in the Premier League since 2018 amid a slew of injuries.

Liverpool have as many as 11 first-team stars unavailable through injury, with Nuñez and Salah among those who were left out of the squad entirely for the mid-week clash.

Both forwards scored in the 4-1 win over Brentford last Saturday, but Nuñez was substituted at half-time with a complaint, while there were reports that Salah — only just returning from a hamstring tear — had aggravated his old issue.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of Luton, Klopp admitted that both players were being monitored 'day by day', raising serious questions over their fitness for Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

Asked about the absent duo ahead of kick off, Klopp appeared to admit that their absence wasn't simply pre-cautionary.

"They couldn’t have played tonight," Klopp told Sky Sports’ Juliette Ferrington.

"From here we will see who will be back for Sunday, but that is not important at the moment."

In the end neither player was needed for the victory over the Hatters, with all three of the Reds' starting attackers (Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott) getting on the scoresheet in a morale-boosting display.

Speaking after Wednesday night's clash, Klopp admitted the injury situation is 'not great' and re-iterated that they can only 'go by day' ahead of the Carabao Cup final and other upcoming games.

He said: "The situation is not great, absolutely not, we don’t have to make that now nicer than it is. I’m so happy that all the kids came on and played, Dannsy [Jayden Danns] said 50 times, ‘Thank you, boss!’ I’m so happy that I could give him that opportunity, the boys deserve it.

"But obviously for us there are now a lot of super-important games coming up, and we don’t know, we go day by day. I cannot say anything about it and I don’t know. But after Brentford I had no clue the situation would be like it was now. So, let’s see.

"There’s one phrase that stands: as long as we have 11, we will go for it. That’s all I can promise."

In addition to Nuñez and Salah, Liverpool are currently without Thiago Alcantara, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Stefan Bajcetic, Alisson Becker, Ben Doak, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Dominik Szoboszlai.
