"We played against a top team tonight" - Ajax boss on Champions League clash

Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has opened up on last night's Champions League group stage clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds secured a 2-1 victory over the Dutch side. However, the game could have easily ended in a 1-1 draw if it weren't for Joel Matip's goal in the dying stages of the match.

Schreuder has given his thoughts on the fixture.

"We played against a top team tonight. We had lots of problems in possession to find the free man. Liverpool played with lots of intensity and we had some problems coping with that," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

"In the first half the first time we showed courage it resulted in the goal, that gave us a bit more belief to do it. Liverpool’s last pass in attack wasn’t always great and that resulted in a back and forth game you don’t really want.

"At the end, when the goal happens with a dead-ball situation it’s quite sour. We have lots of young players and they can learn a lesson from that. I can live with the defeat, of course. I can’t say it was underserved.

"Liverpool were the better team this evening, there’s no shame in that but you have to learn from that. Thiago was an extra weapon on the midfield and he could switch the play. It’s a top team. It’s not for nothing they are the favourites in this group.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

Ajax defended well against Liverpool. They didn't offer a lot going forward. But, Ajax gave themselves every possible chance to at least take a point out of last night's clash.

We do believe that Liverpool deserved to win the game. The Reds looked the far more threatening of the two sides.

Liverpool will face Ajax again at the Amsterdam Arena on the 26th of October. That will be a tough outing for Jurgen Klopp's team.

But, the Reds are one of the best teams in the world. We are backing them to find a way to secure the three points against Ajax away from home.
