Liverpool are flying at the top of the Premier League and the Champions League.

They have won 19 of their last 22 games in all competitions, losing just once.

After last weekend's Merseyside Derby was cancelled and postponed because of Storm Darragh, Liverpool had a few extra days off this week, before taking to the field again last night against Girona in the Champions League.

Mohamed Salah netted the only goal, as Donny Van De Beek fouled Luis Diaz in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.

It caps off Liverpool's emphatic return to Europe's elite competition, as they have now won all six of their games, with two more coming in the New Year.

But while the first team has succeeded so far, the U19s are struggling a little in the UEFA Youth League, which intrinsically follows the fixtures the senior players face.

And after coming from behind to snatch a point against Girona's U19 team last night, one player in particular shone above the rest.

Trent Kone-Doherty's wonder-goal winner

After Jayden Danns scored the opener from a penalty kick, Liverpool were firmly put on the back foot after Ranel Young received a straight red card for committing a violent conduct offence.

Then, things got worse as the Reds conceded a penalty kick of their own straight after half time and Girona then doubled up 10 minutes later to take control of the game.

However, through defending compactly and keeping the deficit down to one goal for as long as possible, finally, an opportunity to equalise opened up.

After being played in behind by Kyle Kelly, Trent Kone-Doherty managed to latch on to the ball heading leftwards, nudge Girona's captain Marc Aznar off the ball, and then continue his run towards goal, before smashing it in the goalkeeper's near post.

It was a finish that was instantly reminiscent of Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, who often opts to score off the left by drilling a finish into the bottom corner.

The 18-year-old's 83rd-minute effort ensured Liverpool came away with a point despite all the adversity they had faced.

The equaliser was enough to ensure that the Reds qualify for the knockout stage, finishing 19th in the league phase on eight points.

It was his fourth goal this season, in addition to two assists - a run of form that has been mightily impressive after he returned from a significant spell on the sidelines during the summer.

Arne Slot is said to be a keen admirer of the winger and while Liverpool's men's team is set for a jam-packed schedule this season, the team will need all the help it can get, so Kone-Doherty could find himself involved in the senior team setup sooner rather than later.
