Virgil van Dijk delivered a scathing verdict on VAR after Liverpool succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

A late own goal from Joel Matip decided the game in Tottenham's favor, but red cards to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota and a disallowed goal from Luis Diaz emerged as major talking points from what was an eventful game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite going down to ten men in the first half after Jones' sending-off, Liverpool had the ball in the back of the net as Diaz finished brilliantly after latching on to a pass from Mohamed Salah. However, the Reds' joy was short-lived as the goal was chalked off upon consultation with the VAR.

While it was a close call, Diaz appeared to be onside even to the naked eye, making the VAR verdict all the more hard to believe. Speaking after the game, Van Dijk admitted that he's beginning to lose faith in the technology as he went on to indicate that VAR seemingly cost Liverpool the game.

He told Match of the Day after the game: "I'm losing faith is difficult to say. The VAR should be absolutely clear and obvious with everything they're deciding on. I've seen the still back, I think on live TV there were no lines being shown. It's all a bit strange, I don't know who was in the VAR room and making that decision. It's not a good thing, it doesn't look well either. It is what it is, we lost."

Liverpool will be without Jones and Jota for the trip to the Amex Stadium to take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League next week, while Cody Gakpo's involvement is also in doubt after he was substituted at halftime following a challenge by Destiny Udogie.
