Liverpool news: Van Dijk responds to Roy Keane 'arrogance' claim

Virgil van Dijk has dismissed Roy Keane's claims that he spoke arrogantly after Liverpool's goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds couldn't find a way to break down a deep-lying Man Utd defence defence at the weekend, only securing a point against their bitter rivals at Anfield. The result saw Liverpool drop to second in the Premier League table, with Jurgen Klopp's side now sat below Arsenal.

There was evident frustration from captain Van Dijk after an underwhelming result and performance against the Red Devils, the Dutchman stating: "If you see how we played the game, we had most of the ball and created some opportunities. There was only one team trying to win the game.

"In the end they are buzzing with a point and we are very disappointed with a point."

Speaking after the match on Sky Sports, former United midfielder Keane hit back at Van Dijk's comments, suggesting the centre-back was being arrogant in his assessment of the game.

"Virgil van Dijk had arrogance coming out of him, dissing Manchester United like that. He needs a reminder himself. He's playing for a club who have won one title in 30-odd years.

"He's saying only one team wanted to win and that United are buzzing with a point. United are in a difficult place, like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many a year.

"So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today."

When Keane's comments were put to him, Van Dijk dismissed the pundit's claims.

"I like Roy Keane, if he said that then it’s fine," said Van Dijk. "He is Man Utd throughout and I understand he could react like that, but I felt what I said and there is absolutely no arrogance in that.

"Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity and we couldn’t score and that’s the frustrating part.

"Obviously they are not in the best situation, and if you come here after you have lost last here with a big number you are going to be more than happy with a point. Everyone could see that.

"You could see what their game plan was and what we tried to do and I felt what I said was right and we move on."

Liverpool do indeed need to move on quickly from Sunday's disappointment, with back-to-back home games against West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final and table-toppers Arsenal in the Premier League coming this week.

Hopefully, the bore draw with Man Utd proves to be an outlier.
