Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has given the green light to The Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia over a potential summer transfer, according to reports.

A rumour that will rock new Reds head coach Arne Slot's plans for the 2024/25 campaign, TEAMtalk claim the Dutchman hasn't ruled out the possibility of joining the Saudi Pro League.

In fact, the report states that van Dijk has given the green light to the Saudi negotiator to start talking with Liverpool after his entourage, met with the PIF to better understand the proposal ready for the central defender.

In addition, the report states the Merseyside outfit - after being approached by the PIF - have set van Dijk's valuation around €55 million (£46.3m). However, it's claimed the figure is currently considered too high by the Saudi negotiator, who have made it known that they want to take a few days to internally evaluate their next steps.

As a result, the negotiations could be seriously jeopardised, with the PIF ready to withdraw from talks for van Dijk if his price-tag doesn't drop significantly.

Interestingly though, the Saudi negotiator is said to be willing to play the long game given that van Dijk's contract at Anfield expires next summer and therefore could wait until January 2025 where they can approach the 33-year-old with a pre-contract agreement so he can move as a free agent at the end of the upcoming campaign.

Van Dijk throws Liverpool future into doubt

Perhaps worryingly for Liverpool fans, van Dijk did throw his future into doubt with surprise comments after the Netherlands' Euro 2024 semi-final defeat at the hands of England earlier in the month.

"I haven't the slightest idea right now," he said, per Reuters as per the Daily Mail.

"I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first recover from this.

"After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it's over."
