Virgil van Dijk has provided an update on his contract situation following Liverpool's victory over Brentford on Sunday.

The Liverpool captain was asked whether there is any updates on his contract with the Dutchman having entered his final 12 months of his current deal.

"I'm very calm. I want to be important and stay important for the club. Whatever happens next year we will see.

"Everything happens for a reason. There's no changes in my situation. There is no reason for me to be looking for something else," Van Dijk said on Sky Sports.

The 33 year-old has described Anfield as 'home' irrespective of whatever his future holds and that it holds a very special place in his heart.

"It's home. It's a special place. Whatever happens in the future, Anfield will hold a special place in my heart," the Dutchman added.

Mo Salah and Trent also enter their final years

Alongside Van Dijk, Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also find themselves in their final years of their current contracts, raising concerns that the Anfield side could see some key players depart on free transfers.

The pair have once again shown their value to The Reds with both playing key roles in Liverpool's opening two victories against Ipswich Town and Brentford.

Salah has netted in both games while Alexander-Arnold continued to dictate games with his incredible passing ability from Liverpool's right flank.

Salah and Alexander-Arnold have both been linked with moves away from the club in recent years.

The Egyptian has been a mainstay when it comes to big names being linked with moves to Saudi Arabia while Alexander-Arnold has recently been linked with a transfer to European Champions Real Madrid.

There have been no incomings at Liverpool this summer with none likely to be brought in before next Friday's deadline.

After having the task of finding a Klopp replacement, the Liverpool board may be prioritising contract situations rather than new signings after missing out on their main target Martin Zubimendi.
