Virgil van Dijk shares his personal opinion on Darwin Nunez

Virgil van Dijk shared his opinion on Liverpool teammate Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan has certainly built a reputation.

Darwin Nunez is one of the most interesting players in football right now. He's capable of incredible things that few players can match, while boasting one of the most complete physical skillsets in the game.

At the same time, give him an open goal from 10 yards and you wouldn't be 100% certain that the ball is hitting the net. There's a good chance it's crashing back off the post.

So just how good is he? Fortunately, Liverpool have some of the world's best players available to them and they're as capable as anyone in assessing the 24-year-old.

Virgil van Dijk, for instance, has battled with the greatest players of his generation - and gotten the better of just about all of them. He shared his personal opinion on Nunez recently in a conversation with Men in Blazers.

It's safe to say he rates him.

“Listen, Darwin in my opinion is a handful for any, any defender,” said Van Dijk. “He keeps running, he’s direct, he’s fast, he can jump, he can do everything as a modern day striker. It’s very difficult to play against him.

“Obviously, I played against him once away against Benfica. He was very direct and very, very fast. It’s difficult, it’s difficult for any defender. He’s learning every day, he’s getting better.

"He’s in a good moment and that’s what we need. He needs confidence, he needs to be happy and I think he is at this point, he’s feeling very comfortable within the group and that’s very important, too.”

There is no question that Nunez has everything you need to be a world-class striker. He just doesn't finish his chances particularly well.

When it comes to getting chances, for instance, the Uruguayan is as good as anyone in the Premier League. Per Fbref, only Erling Haaland averages more expected goals per 90 minutes than Nunez, while the pair are joint-first if you include expected assists.

The difference is that Haaland has scored 14 goals on the back of that xG, while Nunez has seven.

The physical attributes, the running, the know-how, all create a world-class player. There's no question about that. It's just the finishing that prevents Nunez from being on the level of the very best.

If that clicks, Liverpool will have someone incredibly special.
