Virgil van Dijk admits uncertainty over his Liverpool future

Virgil van Dijk has admitted that he's uncertain over his Liverpool future following Jurgen Klopp's decision to quit as Reds boss come the end of the season.

The Dutchman was named Liverpool captain at the beginning of the campaign following Jordan Henderson's exit and has been back to his imperious best in the heart of the Reds' defence.

However, Virgil Van Dijk has less than 18 months left on his current contract and Klopp's end of season exit means there are doubts over whether the 32-year-old will extend his current deal with the club.

The Netherlands skipper has admitted to being uncertain over his Anfield future, especially given the big changes expected at Liverpool after Klopp's announcement.

Asked about whether he will be part of a new era at Liverpool, Van Dijk stated: "That’s a big question. Well, I don’t know.

"Listen, I don’t know. The club will have a big job on their hands. That is well known. To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff is leaving, and there are so many things that will change.

"So the club has a big job on its hands and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation, I can’t say now."

He added: "Obviously it will be the end of Jurgen Klopp’s era. I am very glad that I am still part of it. That is why I don’t like to speak about it. I am still part of it. That is my main focus now and we will see at the end of the season.

"Hopefully we have the success that we all dream of and fight for each and every day. By then there will probably be more clarification about what the club wants for the future and then we will see."

Klopp's assistant managers Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz will also leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign, as will elite development coach Vitor Matos.

Jorg Schmadtke will also depart Anfield in February, although he was only ever a short-term solution as the club's sporting director.

Liverpool will be keen to tie the resurgent Van Dijk down to a new deal as soon as possible, but talks may be difficult if they don't have a new manager lined up soon.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is the front-runner to replace Klopp at present as he continues to work wonders with his unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side, while Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has also been linked.
