Vincent Kompany cites 'luck' as key in Liverpool's win over Burnley

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany felt his side were unlucky to come away from Anfield with nothing after yesterday's clash with Liverpool.

Despite a sluggish first half seeing the Reds go into the break level, they kicked into gear after the restart and went on to win 3-1, with goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez securing the three points.

The game had the odd moment of controversy, with question marks surrounding whether Alexis Mac Allister fouled Josh Brownhill in the build up to Liverpool's second goal.

However, the decision would end up going the way of the hosts, giving the Reds a lead that they were able to hold on to for the remainder of the contest.

This was despite the flurry of chances Burnley had in the second half, with David Fofana missing two gilt-edged chances to equalise.

Leaving Kompany frustrated by the result, the former Manchester City skipper believed his side simply didn't have the luck of the cards.

“I’ve been to this place myself as a player quite a few times, where, in a game, we didn’t have as many chances as we did today,” he said. “The game plan for us is always the same when we go to these types of places.

“You need a little bit of luck on your side. We didn’t have that despite the performance. And you need to put away your chances. And we didn’t do that, despite the performance.

“These teams at this level have the quality to punish your every mistake. It’s a team with a lot of quality. It’s a stadium and crowd with a lot of history and passion for the team. That’s always tough.

“For as much as we came to play our own game, we did really well in that environment and that is something positive to take for sure. It should give us the belief to carry on.

“I’ll take the positives out of the game but I can’t hide the fact that we would have liked to have had the result of course.”

From Jurgen Klopp's perspective, he was delighted that despite facing adversity, his side were able to overcome their opponents.

"No problem with fighting hard for the result," the Liverpool manager said. "Actually, I can’t remember the last time when that wasn’t the case.

"But today obviously, for some obvious and for some less obvious reasons, it was clear it will be a really tricky afternoon. It was about how we deal with it, how much character we can show, and the boys showed exactly what we needed."
