"Very unlucky" - Diogo Jota provides a fitness update on himself
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has revealed that he will take no part in the club's pre-season friendly against Manchester United at the Rajamangala Stadium today.
The 25-year-old said that he suffered a hamstring injury whilst representing Portugal during the recent international break.
As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter and the Liverpool Echo, Jota said: "Yeah, a hamstring injury (in) the last game with Portugal, very unlucky! But it happened and I just had the summer to recover well and start the pre-season at 100 per cent.
"(The game) probably too soon. As well, because I was with the national team I just came back yesterday as well, so I still need to do the last steps to be 100 per cent with the team so probably that is too soon. But I will be ready very, very soon.
"Obviously, the national team players had these extra days which were very important as well. I think we all had the opportunity to relax, to start again, to do a little reset and be ready to go again.
"I think this season could be similar, hopefully, and we need to be ready and of course with the World Cup in between as well (during) the season, that will be an extra factor… so hopefully there is a good season ahead."
Anfield Watch Verdict
Jota's injury does not sound too serious, which is good news.
Jota has been a terrific player for Liverpool. The club signed the forward from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee of £40.23 million back in the summer of 2020.
Since then, Jota has scored 44 goals and registered 19 assists in 131 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.
The 25-year-old is contracted until the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign. So, the Anfield faithful will be able to sit back and watch Jota represent the club for many years to come.
Because of the Portugal international's age, we are confident that he still has room for improvement. But, only time will tell if the forward is to go to another level.
We wish Jota all the best ahead of the new season.
