"Up there with the best" - Paul Merson waxes lyrical about Alexander-Arnold

Pundit Paul Merson has waxed lyrical about Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It is common knowledge that the Scouser is an elite player going forward. Alexander-Arnold has scored 14 goals and registered 62 assists in 235 appearances for the club's first-team.

With that being the case, Merson has praised the 23-year-old's attacking ability.

“The way I see it, England are producing good midfield players, but they aren’t really prolific passers of the ball like Thiago or Jorginho,” he told Sportskeeda.

“Declan Rice is an excellent box-to-box midfielder, while Kalvin Phillips is a player who is more about his work-rate and industry than his passing.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold played as a midfielder in his younger days at Liverpool and also did so once for England.

“It’s a difficult position as the game literally goes through you, so you need to be a lot more involved over the course of the 90 minutes.

“His passing range is up there with the best in the country along with De Bruyne, so I’d like to see him play in midfield at some point in the future.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

There is no denying that Alexander-Arnold is a superb player going forward. But, if the right-back wants to take his game to another level, he will have to improve defensively.

Far too often Alexander-Arnold is exposed when defending. However, the good thing for the full-back is that he is only 23 years of age.

Alexander-Arnold has plenty of time left in his career to become a complete defender. The youngster has had a slow start to the 2022-23 campaign.

Alexander-Arnold is yet to register an assist. But, the lad is a generational talent. We are confident that Alexander-Arnold will bounce back.
