Union SG 2-1 Liverpool: Player ratings

© IMAGO

Here are our player ratings as Liverpool lost 2-1 to Union SG in the UEFA Europa League. A difficult game for everyone involved.

Starting XI

Caoimhin Kelleher - 4

Probably should have done better on both goals. Did still make a couple of good saves, while his passing was decent. Still, a questionable display.

Conor Bradley - 4

Not a good game for Bradley, who struggled up against Union's best forward. The hybrid right-back role also looked tricky for him - but that can certainly be excused.

Jarell Quansah - 7

Defensively, Quansah was suspect here. It was a tough one for the centrebacks as Liverpool were so open, admittedly. Of course, he gets marks for scoring the goal - his very first at senior level.

Ibrahima Konate - 6

Konate was fine here in what was very difficult game for him - he's not used to being the senior defender. Passed the ball very well.

Luke Chambers - 4

A really rough night for Chambers. Maybe to be expected given how often Union played down a very inexperienced flank. Did win his tackles (2) but was dispossessed four times. A learning experience.

Wataru Endo - 3

Some will have him lower. Endo struggled badly, losing the ball and failing to deal with Union's movement. His half-time exit was likely planned but he needed to come off regardless.

Curtis Jones - 5

Jones was unable to make things happen and a lack of options going forward led to him holding onto the ball a lot. Still, he was involved and was certainly the best pressing-player - he just had to do the latter on his own a lot.

Harvey Elliott - 5

Struggled, like Jones, to find options going forward. At one point he was visibly frustrated with the lack of movement in the first half. Tried hard to force some creativity but the night didn't allow for it.

Kaide Gordon - 5

Didn't get involved all that much but also didn't do much wrong when he was. A quiet game but honestly, it's just fantastic seeing him back on the pitch at senior level after nearly two years away.

Cody Gakpo - 5

We've double-checked - he did play tonight. Gakpo played the full 90 minutes but only had 30-odd touches. Couldn't get into the game and did little as a result. At the same time, didn't do much wrong.

Ben Doak - 4

Just wasn't on it today. Dispossessed five times (the most of anyone while he was on the pitch), Doak looked a split second slow. Couldn't make anything happen even if he did get involved as often as he could.

Subs

Joe Gomez - 6

Can't ask for too much more. Gomez was solid after coming on and looked like a leader at the back.

Ryan Gravenberch - 7

One of the few players on the night who could actually move the ball through midfield. An encouraging cameo.

Calum Scanlon - 6

Didn't have to do all that much but did it well. One defensive tackle was fantastic for a player his age.

Darwin Nunez - 5

One of those where Liverpool instantly looked more threatening when Nunez arrived. Just unfortunate that no one created chances for him.

James McConnell - N/A

No real chance for McConnell to influence the game here.
