Union Saint-Gilloise manager Alexander Blessin has said his side beat Liverpool by showing 'no respect' in Thursday's meeting.

The Reds concluded the Europa League group phase with a limp 2-1 defeat away in Belgium, as Jurgen Klopp opted to field Liverpool's youngest ever lineup in a European tie.

Jarell Quansah scored his first ever Liverpool senior goal on the night, in between first-half strikes from Mohamed Amoura and Cameron Puertas.

Regardless of the loss, Klopp's side finish top of Group E, having already secured their spot in the competition's last 16. Union S-G, meanwhile, drop down into the Europa Conference League, having finished third behind the Reds and Toulouse.

After the game, manager Blessin hailed his side's performance in beating Liverpool, claiming the hosts created a 'magical night' by not bowing down to their opponents.

“This is Liverpool, you can say they changed the team but it's still Liverpool,” he told reporters (via the Liverpool Echo). “For me, the performance of the team, and from the first minute I had the feeling that we have no respect and this is what I said before.

“Before every Europa League game, we had a little respect and always needed 45 minutes to come into the game. The last two games now, I saw progression.

“This is what I am expecting from the guys that they are learning. The willingness is there.

“We wanted to create a magical night. We did this, a really nice atmosphere with our fans celebrating. In the end, I’m very happy about that.

"I think, and this is what I said before the match to the guys, this is creating history or writing a new chapter. Creating your own history.

“It’s a big thing for everyone, for the club, for the fans, for us as a team. I’m really proud of this evening and proud to have this victory. It is an amazing feeling to earn this victory.”

Liverpool now avoid European football again until March, when the last 16 of the tournament is schedule to take place.
