"Two years ago" - Mike Dean on why Marcus Rashford's goal was given

Referee Mike Dean has explained why Marcus Rashford's goal was given on Monday night.

Liverpool came up against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Reds lost the Premier League fixture 2-1.

However, the game could have ended in a draw had Rashford's goal been chalked out. The Manchester United forward appeared to be offside before finding the back of the net.

But, Dean has explained why the goal was given.

"Two years ago, Rashford's strike might have been disallowed - one of those 'toenail' offsides that was highlighted when VAR first arrived in England," he told the Liverpool Echo, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.

"But the Premier League and PGMOL made changes for the good of the game - in agreement with the clubs. First the 'kick point' - the moment a team-mate plays the ball - is confirmed.

"Once they are locked in, the system will then flash up green for onside or red for offside. It's not subjective. It's factual. But last summer, changes were made so that if the lines are overlapping, it's onside.

"It's too close to call otherwise and so the advantage is given to the attacker, as it was with Rashford at Old Trafford on Monday evening.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

The fine margins in football can be heartbreaking. On Monday night, we were left shattered.

But, Liverpool need to move on and go again when Bournemouth come to town on Saturday.

The clash will kick-off at 3:00pm BST.  The Reds have failed to secure a victory in the early parts of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.

The Reds need to get going otherwise the season will be over in a heartbeat. Jurgen Klopp is a world-class manager, so we are backing him in to turn Liverpool's campaign around.
