Trent Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from the England squad for the September internationals due to a hamstring strain.

The Liverpool vice captain was originally listed as a midfielder in Gareth Southgate's selection for the matches against Ukraine (9 September) and Scotland (12 September) and reported to training at St. George's Park, but has now pulled out due to the knock he suffered in the win over Aston Villa.

How long is Alexander-Arnold out for?

The 24-year-old – who wore the captain's armband in Virgil van Dijk's absence on Sunday – was substituted around the 70th minute of the Reds' 3-0 victory over Villa at Anfield, after receiving treatment on the field.

After leaving the pitch, Alexander-Arnold headed straight down the tunnel, while Klopp revealed the player had sustained a hamstring injury – though it appeared "not too serious".

According to the Athletic, the right back underwent a scan on Monday and is set to be sidelined for up to two weeks as a result of a 'minor strain'.

What games will Alexander-Arnold miss?

The injury is serious enough to force Alexander-Arnold miss both of England's upcoming fixtures, while the recovery timeline also makes him a doubt for Liverpool's first game after the international break – an away trip to Wolves (16 September).

However, the Athletic's report claims he will miss no more than one Premier League game and, therefore, should be in contention to face West Ham at Anfield (24 September).

Between those two games, the Reds also travel to Austria to face LASK (21 September) in their Europa League group stage opener – a fixture Alexander-Arnold could also sit out as a pre-caution.

Who could play instead of Alexander-Arnold?

Liverpool could be facing something of a mini-defensive crisis for the trip to Molineux.

Van Dijk may also be out of contention, as he awaits the decision on his FA charge for improper conduct, while Ibrahima Konate is recovering from his own hamstring issue which forced him out of the France squad this September.

With Conor Bradley another injury absentee, Joe Gomez is likely to shift to right back in the case of Alexander-Arnold's prolonged recovery.

Jarell Quansah (yet to start a Premier League game) and Joel Matip remain the Reds' other centre backs, though Wataru Endo could be another emergency option at the back for Jurgen Klopp.
