"They are not a bad team overnight" - Rio Ferdinand on Liverpool
Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has defended Liverpool after their 4-1 loss to Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
The Reds have won six major trophies since 2019. However, Liverpool have had a terrible start to the 2022-23 campaign.
Along with last night's result, the Reds have only won two of their opening six Premier League games.
But, Ferdinand is confident that Liverpool will bounce back in the near future.
“Liverpool are a team on the front foot and always go and grab the game and take it off the opponent. Sometimes you have got to be a bit humble and see where you are at," he told BT Sport, as quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter.
“We are getting picked off a little bit, Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and Andy Robertson, sit in. Fabinho, you sit in front, and we are going to make it hard for them. At no point in this game did they say to Napoli you try and break us down now.
“They kept allowing the spaces for them to run into and they kept allowing them to have that confidence to actually play balls through the pitch, over the top and behind because they were allowing and giving them that.
“Listen, I will repeat what I said on the show before, they are not a bad team overnight. They have just got to iron these things out.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
We completely agree with Ferdinand's take. The reality is, Liverpool challenged for the quadruple last season.
So, the Reds are still a good side. But, they have been way off the mark in the early parts of the 2022-23 campaign.
However, things can change very quickly in football. Hopefully Liverpool can turn things around in the coming weeks.
It is not easy to watch your football team struggle. You can tell the players are hurting. Hopefully a positive result is around the corner.
