"There were ups and downs" - Loris Karius reflects on Liverpool career
Goalkeeper Loris Karius has reflected on his Liverpool career.
The shot-stopper is contracted with the Reds until the end of June. Therefore, it has been confirmed that Karius will depart the club as a free agent this summer.
With that being the case, the 28-year-old has given his verdict on his time at Anfield.
Speaking with beIN Sports, Karius said: “There were ups and downs. It’s part of the game, that’s football, but I’ve developed as a person.
“I’ll take my determination with me to my next job.
“It’s about having a good feeling. The club can be in Germany, but also abroad. I just have to feel that the chemistry with those responsible is right, that they have a good feeling about me, and I have a good feeling with them.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Liverpool signed Karius from Mainz for a transfer fee of £5.58 million back in the summer of 2016. However, the transfer failed drastically.
Karius only went on to make 49 appearances for Liverpool's first-team. The goalkeeper's last appearance for the Reds came in the 2018 Champions League final (loan spells with Besiktas and Union Berlin have occurred since the aforementioned fixture).
Real Madrid ended up defeating Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev to secure the European Cup. Karius was at fault for two of the three goals that the Reds conceded on the night. His Anfield career basically ended after that match.
Liverpool signed goalkeeper Alisson from Roma for a transfer fee of £56.25 million directly after the 2018 Champions League final.
Since then, the Reds have not looked back. Liverpool have won six major trophies since Alisson's arrival.
Liverpool also have the promising Caoimhin Kelleher waiting in the wings. So, it is no real surprise that Karius is surplus to requirements at Anfield.
We wish the goalkeeper all the best going forward. Hopefully he can get his career back on track. Once a Red, always a Red.
