"The writing was on the wall" - Graeme Souness on Liverpool's display against Fulham

Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness has given his opinion on the Reds' display against Fulham at Craven Cottage last Saturday.

The Premier League fixture ended in a 2-2 draw. Souness said that he could tell within the opening 15 minutes of the game that Liverpool weren't quite at their best.

As quoted by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, he told talkSPORT the following: “I looked at the first half and for the first 15 minutes, the writing was on the wall for Liverpool. You have to say Fulham were fabulous, really aggressive, Liverpool didn’t get a second on the ball.

“But if you’re a big team you have to expect that. You don’t go out to play for Liverpool knowing there’s going to be a game you’re going to win, everyone wants to take you on, be aggressive to you, it’s a cup final - get used to it."

Anfield Watch Verdict

We completely agree with Souness' take. Liverpool looked slightly off against Fulham and they were punished.

Usually Klopp's side stamp their authority on the match. That didn't occur against Fulham.

We found it strange that the Reds weren't at their absolute best against the Cottagers. Liverpool completed a solid pre-season and would have known Fulham were going to at least challenge them.

It was the Cottagers' first game back in the Premier League since the early parts of 2021. But, the Reds just weren't good enough.

Hopefully Liverpool have learnt some hard lessons from their clash against Fulham. If they are to challenge Manchester City for the title, they can't be dropping games to teams like Fulham.
