Aston Villa and Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, according to The Athletic, as cited by The Anfield Buzz's Twitter account.

The report states that both Premier League clubs are at the front of the queue to sign the Englishman.

Gomez was linked with a loan move to Aston Villa back in January. However, the transfer did not occur, obviously.

Gomez's contract expires in 2024. Transfermarkt value the defender at €25 million.

Anfield Watch Verdict

It would be a crying shame if Gomez left Anfield. The reality is, he is a very good centre-back.

Gomez is a key reason why Liverpool won the 2019-20 Premier League title. The Englishman made 28 appearances during the aforementioned campaign.

However, we strongly believe that Gomez is yet to reach his full potential. He is only 24 years of age.

Gomez is also a good role model for the players around him, which has been pointed out by teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in the past.

“He’s an amazing lad. He’s someone who has worked so, so hard. He always has, I think that’s just in his nature; in the gym, on the pitch, always giving 100 per cent,” Alexander-Arnold said in an interview with Liverpool’s official website.

Unfortunately, injuries have impacted Gomez's career in recent times. The likes of Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate have overtaken the Englishman.

Gomez has only played 530 minutes of football for Liverpool this season.

Therefore, we would not be shocked if Gomez did look for a move away from Anfield come the end of the season.

But, hopefully that is not the case. Virgil van Dijk and Matip won't be around forever. They are both in their 30s, which means Gomez will become a key figure in the Reds' back four again.
