“The sale of Darwin is more than justified" - Benfica president on sale of forward

Benfica president Rui Costa has opened up on the departure of striker Darwin Nunez.

The Portuguese club sold the Uruguay international to Liverpool for a hefty transfer fee earlier this summer.

Costa has implied that it was an easy decision to move Nunez on.

“We are talking about one of the highest transfers of the market,” he told BTV, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“We are still coming out of a pandemic situation, which held back the football market. Making a sale of €75m+€25m is not open to discussion.

“The sale of Darwin is more than justified. There weren’t even conditions to keep him; it was completely impossible, for the values that came into the club and for what Darwin went on to earn.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

All we will say is that we are delighted the club purchased Nunez. The striker can seriously play.

Nunez scored 48 goals and registered 16 assists in 85 appearances for Benfica's first-team.

The Uruguay international has had a reasonable start to life at Anfield. Nunez has found the back of the net twice in five games.

The exciting thing about the forward is that he is only 23 years of age. Therefore, Nunez is far from the finished article.

We wish him all the best for the remainder of the season. Nunez has the potential to be a very big player for Liverpool in the years to come.

But, only time will tell if he is to live up to his potential.
