"The priority now has to be" - James Pearce on Liverpool's next move

The Athletic's James Pearce has given his opinion on what Liverpool need to do next after securing Darwin Nunez's signature.

The striker has joined the Reds from Benfica for a transfer fee of €100 million. Now that Liverpool have secured Nunez's signature, Pearce would like to see the club agree new terms with winger Mohamed Salah.

He told The Athletic the following: "With (Sadio) Mane’s replacement secured, the priority now has to be sorting out Salah’s contract situation. The newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year, who is about to enter the final year of his existing deal, has yet to receive an improved offer (rejected the initial deal) since the season finished.

"Mane will be missed. But the show goes on — and a front three of (Luis) Diaz, Nunez and Salah from the start of next season is mouthwatering."

Anfield Watch Verdict

We completely agree with Pearce's take. It is vital that Liverpool agree new terms with Salah.

As Pearce said, the winger's contract expires in the summer of 2023. Therefore, he could leave the club on a free transfer next year, which is obviously concerning.

Salah scored 31 goals in 51 appearances for Liverpool's first-team last season. Also, he is only 30 years of age.

The aforementioned figures highlight that Salah is far from finished at the top level. So, to lose him on a free transfer would be a disaster.

We believe that Salah would be silly to look for a move away from Anfield. The Egyptian international is playing in a top team and he is loved by the supporters.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. We are hoping that Salah is smart enough to see this.

But, only time will tell where his long-term future lies.
